When you go for a hike there a few items you should carry on you to make sure you’re prepared for a mishap. If you are hiking in an area you are unfamiliar with you should carry a map of the area with you. Hopefully you won’t need it, but it will be invaluable if you do. You should also carry a compass with you to properly use the map or to simply get your bearings.
It is important to stay hydrated when hiking because you will find yourself dehydrated before long if you do not stay on top of drinking water, so be sure to bring a canteen along. You will also find yourself burning through calories faster than you might imagine so bring along something to eat. There are a wide variety of protein bars and other dense foods that are perfect for hiking due to their light weight and packaging.
Lastly, be sure to bring along something that you can start a fire with. A box of water resistant matches or one of the many fire starters on the market will work just fine. You may not need to use them, but should the situation arise where you are stranded in the wilderness a fire will be the most welcome thing you see besides another person.
